The Wawa-New Yorker

Where’d the time Go?

June 30, 2016 · 10 Comments

Hey people!

I hope all is well.

Okay, so if you know me, you know I’m OBSESSED with my niece and nephew. I really do love all children, but my niece and nephew are mine, so I can get away with the little things I do for love – like throwing pillows at them – without them thinking I’m crazy!

At 6 and a half and 5, they have changed my life in so many ways. Everything I learned about babies; from diaper changes and giving baths, to making the perfect chocolate milk (there’s a science to it), learning to share my food, awesome kid shows like Princess Sophia and Power Rangers Samurai, to my storytelling, you name it, I have learned from practicing on or hanging out with them. They’re like my best friends (after my siblings).

Anyways so, last Monday, I called my sister on FaceTime to speak with them when my niece announced she was going for her first sleepover. My siblings and I stopped immediately and asked, “WHERE?!?” She replied with a smile, “Whitney’s!” At this we relaxed a little. We ALL know Whitney… And her mom… And her dad… And where she lives… So in real life, that should’ve eased our minds that everything would be fine, right?

Eh, no.

When we got off FaceTime, my siblings and I started wondering when my niece grew old enough to go on sleepovers? Like seriously, wasn’t she just born? We then journeyed down memory lane and traded Ari-stories. Eventually it dawned on us that babygirl was growing up and we better enjoy her while she still thought we were cool.

On Saturday, I called her to wish her a fun night. I don’t even know when I started crying. I was telling her to be careful, play nice and be good when I just lost it. Like, my baby was about to spend a night out? Without a parent or her brother or one of us? Where did the time go? After convincing her I had allergies, I said bye and we hung up.

The next day after church, we all texted my sister to find out if my niece was back from her sleepover and if yes, how it went. As opposed to responding to 10 million messages, my sister gave her my niece the phone and she left the most beautiful voice message. She told us she had the best night of her life. She had pancakes and waffles and eggs and so much fun. Then she thanked us for making sure she was okay and said she loved us.

You guessed it, I cried like an idiot after listening to that too.

*sigh*

As always, thank you for reading.

Love always,

The Wawa-NewYorker

P.S. – Please say a quick prayer for DJ Obi… He is about to break the Guinness World Record for the Longest Marathon Club DJing. Please ask for God to give him the strength to finish the greatness he’s started, Amen. Get it Kid!!
